AI generated mapping that’s not just about the bigger picture … 

It began with mapping the entire Peak District National Park at 12.5cm resolution, producing observational insights with advanced AI. 

Now, with the support of the Protected Landscapes Partnership, Landscape Observatory is building an Earth observation tool that prioritises both scale and precision. This innovative breakthrough will be the most detailed landscape intelligence system ever created for the Protected Landscapes.

It will subsequently be scaled across all of the UK’s Protected Landscapes, covering 25% of England’s land area.

Better resolution means better results

Combining high-resolution aerial imagery supplied by Bluesky International Ltd with advanced AI mapping allows a deeper understanding of surface detail. 

The accurate identification of habitat conditions, land use and cultural heritage informs Adaptive Management plan practices. As a result, this means we can protect and conserve these spaces.

Why it matters

Protecting nature starts with knowing where it is. 

Manual interpretation of vast image datasets is slow and inconsistent. Landscape Observatory provides a more efficient solution without sacrificing vital surface detail. Consequently, this enables land managers, conservationists, and policymakers to make informed and timely decisions about habitat restoration and species recovery.

Landscape Observatory is a collaborative partnership between Cranfield University Environment Centre and the Protected Landscapes Partnership. This project unites cutting-edge AI mapping and local environmental knowledge to become a national model for habitat condition monitoring, vital for adaptive land management planning.
