Landscape Observatory has been accepted into the Protected Landscape Partnership Incubator Hub, securing its first year of funding.
The establishment of Landscape Observatory will provide a platform for building on and advancing the latest critical thinking in conservation management. For example, integrating adaptive management frameworks such as Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) and the use of AI and satellite data.
Habitat condition monitoring will develop a condition assessment methodology that is easy and cost effective to use. The team will develop and test a proof of concept to ensure long term application of cutting-edge concepts to ensure management plans and habitat features are managed and monitored effectively.
An integral element of the condition assessment methodology will be the generation of high-resolution habitat extent and condition data which will also inform adaptive management strategies informed by RAD.
This approach will enable National Parks, National Landscapes and National Trails to respond dynamically to ecological changes, ensuring their resilience and functionality as part of the UK’s 30×30 commitments and the Race to Net Zero.
Funding will enable the development of AI maps in Year 1 for:
- 5 National Parks
- 10 National Landscape
- 5 National Trails
During that time Year 2 and Year 3 will be fully scoped to complete all landscape AI Maps for the remaining NLs, NPAs and NTs in England.
